And much, much more! Dear Woodworker and/or Entrepreneur! You and I probably have one thing in common...a passion for woodworking. I've always loved woodworking, but I have to admit that I've never mastered some of the technical skills that many craftsmen possess. I guess you could say I know just enough to be dangerous! In 2005, I began researching ways to use my woodworking skills to support my family when I stumbled across an article that talked about the growing outdoor furniture business. Further research revealed how lucrative this business can be...and it's true. The chart below illustrates the materials cost of one my chairs: The above chair had a retail price of $189 and a wholesale price of $89. I used to sell them both ways, but charging retail was much better with a gross profit of over $165! After many refinements to my manufacturing process, I was able to get the production time of an unpainted chair to about an hour and a half, and I will show you how to do the same! The bad news for me is that I grossly underestimated the time it took to figure out this manufacturing process. It’s one thing to build a few adirondack chairs in your garage over the course of a weekend or two; it’s a whole other story to build one in an hour and a half at a level of quality that will bring top dollar. What I thought would take a few months to establish actually took over a year, and by the time I figured out how to build my products, I was out of capital and had to go back to corporate America. The reality is that if you decide to go full-time and leave a 50,000/year job to start a business with $5,000/month in overhead, each day without a sale will cost you over $300. That can add up quickly! For those out there wanting to do this part-time, this is not a concern. But if you want to make the full- time plunge, you must know the costs involved. The book I’m offering here will show you everything I learned in my 2 1/2 years in business. I will tell you how to make a high quality product in less than two hours. This includes everything from cutting your product, to assembly to finishing to packing. I will show you all the jigs I created and how I made them. For anyone contemplating a business such as this, this little book will save you months of set-up time and thousands of dollars in lost revenue…I guarantee it! Since I am no longer in the outdoor furniture business, I have no reason to protect my “industry secrets,” which is exactly why I wrote this book. With any profession, you will be much better after a few years than when you first start. Imagine starting an outdoor furniture business with a two-year head start! I am letting you pick up where I left off. When I started researching this business, I could find no guide or book written on the subject of manufacturing outdoor furniture. There were plenty of resources that talked about how to build an adirondack chair, but nothing that helped with the principal of mass production. This makes sense; American-made outdoor furniture is very much a niche market, and the companies that produce this kind of product keep their manufacturing techniques extremely confidential. Looking back, if I had the ideas and techniques outlined in this book, I could have established my manufacturing process so much sooner, and would probably still be in business today. This book isn't just about manufacturing, either. I will share with you all of the experiences I had in selling my products, and outline the nine most effective sales strategies that worked for me. You can build a product as efficiently as you like, but if you've got nobody to buy it, it won’t do you any good! Regardless of your decision to purchase my book, I want to wish you well in your venture. The recovering economy has created an unprecedented entrepreneurial boom, and many displaced Americans are no longer relying on large corporations as a means to support themselves and their families, but rather starting their own businesses and doing it themselves. If this describes you, then I sincerely wish you the best! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to send me an email through the “Contact Us” section of our site. Happy Building! Sincerely, Matt Oppenheim About this book… The first half of the book is dedicated to planning your wood products business.
